The mercy of God is all we’re left with

The man whose hopes lie with the present world can’t truly repent or become humble. You can truly repent and become humble only if you feel totally lost, only if you realize that the mercy of God is all you are left with, only if you are convinced that God’s mercy and His merciful eye are your last resort.

That’s the only thing you have to do. Go ahead, then, and do it without further delay.

We’re much too sensitive. We have “over nurtured” feeling sorry for ourselves. Feeling sorry for whom though? The old man. Blessed be the man who will fill his soul with cruelty, if I may say so, against the old man.

This is our sin: we start from what we like, from what suits us.
