هو الكتاب الوحيد الذي يتكلّم الى قلوب كل الناس مع أختلاف خلفيتهم الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والعرقية والثقافية، فهو مناسب لكل الناس في كل العصور والاماكن، فيناسب الفلاح والطبيب، الحداد والمحامي، الرجال والنساء، الاغنياء والفقراء، السود والبيض، انسان القبائل ورجل التكنولوجيا. بالاضافة الى ذلك هنالك مخطوطات أصلية لكل أسفار الكتاب المقدس

هل حُرّف وزيّف الكتاب المقدس؟

الكتاب المقدس لا يمكن تحريفه أبداً، بل هو مصدر كل الكتب وسلطان المكتبات، مَن يجرؤ على تحريف كتاب الله القدير؟! مَن يقدر على تبديل كلمة الله الحيّة الفعّالة!؟، ألا يستطيع الله القدير الذي يمسك بالكواكب والنجوم، أن يحافظ على كتابه العجيب؟! لا يجرؤ على القول ان الكتاب المقدس تحرّف الا الملحدون الذين لا يؤمنون بقدرة وسيادة الله. لا يحتاج كتاب الله الى الانسان ليدافع عنه كما لا يحتاج الاسد لأحد أن يدافع عنه

البابا كيرلس صديق عبد الناصر الذي منع الأقباط من زيارة إسرائيل




الذكرى الخمسين على رحيل قداسة البابا كيرلس السادس، البطريرك الـ116 في تاريخ الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية، الذي لا يزال يعتبره الأقباط والداهم الروحي، ويعلقون صوره على جدران بيوتهم بحثا عن «البركة»، ومنذ 8 أعوام فقط سمح بإطلاق اسمه على الكنائس القبطية الأرثوذكسية سواء في مصر أو المهجر.

توفى البابا في 9 مارس من عام 1971، ونقل جثمانه في احتفال مهيب لدير الشهيد مارمينا العجايبى، وفقا لوصيته، بعد 43 عاماً على رحيله وبالتحديد في 2013 منحه المجمع المقدس للكنيسة برئاسة البابا تواضروس الثاني لقب «قديس»، ليعطي الاعتراف محبيه إمكانية بناء الكنائس باسمه.
وفي التقرير نستعرض مواقف ومحطات من حياة البابا كيرلس السادس، الذي لقب بالقاب عديدة أبرزها رجل الصلاة، وصديق الطلبة، والرجل الوطني .
البابا كيرلس السادس جمعته صداقة بالرئيس الراحل جمال عبدالناصر، وتبرع الأخير لبناء كاتدرائية الأقباط بالعباسية.
كان البابا كيرلس، رجلًا وطنيًا ففور اجتياح إسرائيل لأراضي 1967 أصدر قرارا بمنع زيارة الأقباط للقدس.
يعد البابا كيرلس السادس أول بابا من باباوات الكنيسة المصرية، الذي يفتتح كنائس أرثوذكسية خارج مصر، ففتح الكنائس بالكويت وكندا والولايات المتحدة.
استقلت الكنيسة الإثيوبية عن الكرسي المرقسي بالإسكندرية في عهده.
من مواقفه التي لن ينساها التاريخ القبطي، إعادة جسد القديس «مارمرقس» الرسول إلى القاهرة، وهو مؤسس الكنيسة القبطية الأرثوذكسية والذي بشر وكرز بالمسيحية في مصر، أحد تلاميذ السيد المسيح.

البابا تواضروس البابا كيرلس السادس رجل الرعاية الكاملة

"بسم الأب والابن والروح القدس الإله الواحد آمين، تحل علينا نعمته ورحمته من الآن وإلى الأبد آمين".
هذا يوم بهيج من أيام كنيستنا القبطية الأرثوذكسية، والتى نفرح فيها كما نصلى فى القداس ونقول "من جيلٍ إلى جيل" نحتفل ونحن فى اليوم الثانى للصوم المقدس باليوبيل الذهبى ومرور خمسين عامًا على نياحة البابا كيرلس السادس البطريرك 116، نحتفل فى موضعه الذى أحبه وبذل فيه الكثير، فى الكاتدرائية فى دير الشهيد العظيم مارمينا التى شيدها لتكون شاهدًا على عظمة حياة القداسة، نحتفل جميعًا الآباء المطارنة والآباء الأساقفة وكل الآباء فى محبة نيافة الأنبا كيرلس أفا مينا الأسقف ورئيس هذا الدير، ومحبة كل الرهبان فى هذا الدير العامر، ولولا الإجراءات الاحترازية التى ترافق انتشار هذه الجائحة كنا وجدنا الآلاف فى طرقات الدير احتفالًا، بهذه المناسبة، التى بالحقيقة نحتفل بها فى قلوبنا قبل أن نحتفل بها فى كنيسة أو دير.
البابا كيرلس ظاهرة روحية منيرة فى تاريخ كنيستنا، والبابا كيرلس عندما استمعنا إلى سيرته فى السنكسار وكيف أنه فى سن 25 سنة اتجه للرهبنة ولم تكن أحوال الأديرة فى ذلك الزمن مثل ما هى الآن، وترهب فى دير البرموس فى وادى النطرون ثم لظروف كثيرة وصل إلى منطقة الطاحونة بمصر القديمة وعاش فيها فترات كثيرة، وبدأ يخدم كل المتجهين إليه.
كان محبًا للطلبة والمغتربين الذين يأتون إلى القاهرة لأن المحافظات لم يكن فيها جامعات ولم تنشأ فيها بعد كليات، اختارت العناية الإلهية أن يكون هو البابا رقم 116 بعد فترة عاشتها الكنيسة فى متاعب كثيرة سواء على مستوى الكنيسة أو الوطن، واختارته العناية الإلهية ليكون روح سلام فى الكنيسة، بدأ حبريته بأن تكون أثيوبيا كنيسة ذاتيه غير مرتبطة بالكنيسة القبطية وصار هناك اتفاق أن تستقل الكنيسة الأثيوبية ومن يومها بدأ البطريرك الأول فى أثيوبيا وحاليًا أبونا متياس البطريرك السادس.
وبدأ البابا كيرلس فى تعمير هذا المكان الذى أحبه وكنا نقرأ عن آثاره فى الكتب، الله وضع فى قلبه الاهتمام بهذه المنطقة، وعندما تمت سيامته بطريركًا كان عدد أعضاء المجمع المقدس 11 أسقفًا فقط وجميعهم داخل مصر ما عدا واحد فى السودان وآخر فى القدس وكان عدد الكنائس قليلًا، وبدأ البابا كيرلس كظاهرة جديدة فى تاريخ الكنيسة وتجديد شباب الكنيسة.
أود أن أضع أمام حضرتكم ثلاثة ملامح رئيسية لهذه الحبرية المقدسة التى استمرت من عام 1959 إلى 1971، أى على مدى 12 سنة:
1- محبة السماء: هو منذ رهبنته كان محب للعزلة ويحب أن يعتكف ويكون مع الله وحده، صنع هذا قبل وبعد الرهبنة وأيضًا فى البطريركية، كان الواضح فى هذه الشخصية محبة السماء والسمائين، لذلك كان يقضى أوقات طويلة فى الصلوات والقراءة فى سير القديسين واختباراتهم وكان يقضى وقتًا طويلًا فى الدير، ومحبة السماء تجعل سلوكيات الإنسان مباركة ومقدسة، كان إنسانًا محبًّا للسماء وفكر السماء يشغل عقله وقلبه.. والمعجزات التى كانت تصنع على يديه كانت بسبب صلته القوية بالسماء، فالإنسان فى ضعف لا يستطيع أن يصنع شيئًا ولكن إن وجد تعضيدًا من السماء تصير حياته قوية، عاش البابا كيرلس رغم كل المتاعب التى تعرض لها من الداخل والخارج، والمتاعب التى تأتى من الداخل تكون أكثر مرارة من التى تأتى من الخارج ولكن السماء تسند وتقوى وتشهد على الدوام، تشهد على الأرض وعندما انتقل إليها البابا كيرلس.
لذلك احتفالنا اليوم ليس مجرد ذكرى، نحن نحتفل لنجدد عهودنا مع السماء كمثال هذا البطريرك القديس الذى عاش قريبًا جدًا من السماء وهو على الأرض، اشغل نفسك فى فترة الصوم وأسال نفسك هل تحب السماء وتشتاق إليها وتنشغل بها؟ راجع نفسك واذكر كيف كانت السماء شاهدة على عمل هذا القديس البابا كيرلس السادس.

ظ¢- صداقة القديسين: ما أشهى هذه الصداقة التى تربط الأرض بالسماء، ارتبط بالشهيد العظيم مارمينا وحمل اسمه وعاش فى مكانه وعمر المكان هنا على اسمه، وصار هناك رباط قوى بين قديس وشهيد من القرن الرابع الميلادى والبابا كيرلس فى القرن العشرين وارتبط الاسمان معًا فى صحبة قوية، فى الأيقونات والمعجزات والعمل، وهو لم يصادق القديس مارمينا فقط ولكنه صادق أمنا العذراء مريم وكان قريبًا منها، وهى فخر جنسنا، وفى زمنه ظهرت أمنا العذراء فى عام 1968 م وبلادنا فى تلك الأزمان كانت فى أزمة خطيرة بعد حرب 1967، وكانت بلادنا مجروحة جدًا ولكنها ظهرت، ربما بصلواته، لكى تقدم رسالة طمأنينة لكل المصريين وظلت تظهر لمدة سنتين وظهرت فى مكان واضح وكبير ورآها الألوف والملايين من داخل وخارج مصر.. ظهرت أمنا العذراء لكى ما تمنح سلامًا وهدوءًا لبلادنا وكنيستنا.. وكانت أيام فرح، وصادق أيضًا القديس مارمرقس بحكم منصبه هو خليفة القديس مارمرقس، وفى زمنه كانت فرحة كبيرة أن تأتى الموافقة على رجوع جسد مارمرقس الذى خرج من مصر منذ قرون وعاد إلى مصر بسبب العلاقة القوية بين الكنيسة القبطية والكنيسة الكاثوليكية فى روما.. وكانت حادثة هامة فى تاريخ كنيستنا ومعها اُفتتحت الكاتدرائية المرقسية بالعباسية بالقاهرة ووضع فيها الجسد فى مزار خاص موجود حتى الآن.
هذه الصداقة مع القديسين التى نسميها الشفاعة هى إحدى الملامح الرئيسية فى كنيستنا القبطية الأرثوذكسية.. علاقتنا بالقديسين علاقة حية ودائمًا ونسمى أولادنا وكنائسنا على أسماء القديسين.
ومن الأسئلة الشائعة فى التقليد القبطى أن أسالك عن شفيعك، وهذا ما يعبر عن علاقتنا القوية ليس فى الكنيسة على الأرض بل بالكنيسة فى السماء، هذا القديس كان وثيق الصلة بالسماء وكان له علاقة قوية بالقديسين.
ظ£- الرعاية الكاملة للمؤمنين: اهتم بالرعاية من خلال باب التعمير وباب الامتداد خارج مصر.
باب التعمير: عمل الدير هنا وأصبح مقصد للحياة الروحية، عمل الكاتدرائية المرقسية بالعباسية، وعمر الكاتدرائية بالأزبكية، وعمر فى أماكن كثيرة لتصير مواقع مقدسه يلتجئ إليها المؤمنون، وهذا نوع من الرعاية.
باب الامتداد للخارج: بدأ الأقباط يهاجرون خارج مصر وكان هذا شيئًا جديدًا على حياة المصريين، نحن كمصريين مرتبطين بالأرض والنيل.. بدأ الأقباط يهاجرون لأسباب كثيرة فأخذ على عاتقه أنه عندما تتكون مجموعة من الأقباط فى مكان يرسل لهم كاهنًا لخدمتهم، كانت أول منطقة سنة 1962 فى الكويت وأرسل آباء أحباء وتأسست أول كنيسة لنا خارج مصر بعد السودان والقدس.
يتكرر المشهد سنة 1964 فى كندا ويرسل لهم كاهنًا، وكان حدث كبير لأن كهنة الكويت كانوا انتداب ولكن كندا رسم كاهنًا خاصًا لها.. وكان أول كاهن قبطى فى أمريكا الشمالية أبونا مرقس مرقس، الذى تنيح منذ عام.. ثالث كنيسة كانت فى أمريكا سنة 1968 ، و 1969 كانت الكنيسة الرابعة فى أستراليا، والكنيسة الخامسة كانت فى أنجلترا وهى أول كنيسة فى أوروبا.. فى حبرية هذا القديس تمت زراعة الكنيسة القبطية فى خمس مناطق تمثل قارات العالم، وفى حبريته امتدت الكرازة بهذه البذار الخمسة، وهذا يظهر كيف تتفاعل كنيستنا مع الحدث.. هو كان مهتمًا برعاية المؤمنين فى أى مكان وهذا أمر هام.
الحديث عن حبرية البابا كيرلس وكل ما صنعه الله على يده يطول جدًا، لكن يكفى أننا نجتمع فى هذه المناسبة المفرحة لنا كلنا ونذكره ونتحدث عن ككنز روحى فى كنيستنا.. وجاء عام 2013 م واجتمع المجمع المقدس يون 20 يونية وتم الاعتراف بقداسته قديسًا فى كنيستنا بعد نياحته بحوالى 42 سنة، وأصبح ممكن أن يقدم أمام المجمع ملف بعد 40 سنة من الانتقال ليدرسه المجمع حتى الاعتراف بقداسة الإنسان.. اعترفنا بقداسة القديس البابا كيرلس واعترافنا جاء بعد حياته المقدسة والتى شهد عليها الآلاف من الناس وصار قديسًا فى كنيستنا وصارت تُبنى كنائس على اسمه وتُرسم الأيقونات ويذكر اسمه فى الصلوات ويصير قديسًا قريبًا لنا جميعًا.
باسم المجمع المقدس كله نفرح فى هذا الصباح فى كنيستنا وهى فرصة طيبة أن يحضر كل هؤلاء الآباء المطارنة والأساقفة، هذه المناسبة العطرة التى تعيش فى قلوبنا ونفرح بها.. نفرح كثيرًا ونطلب صلوات هذا القديس من أجلنا ومن أجل كنيستنا ومن أجل بلادنا، ونتذكر أيضًا علاقته القوية التى كانت مع الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر وكان لها أثرًا كبيرًا، ومن أهم آثارها بناء الكاتدرائية المرقسية فى القاهرة.
نحن نشكر الله الذى أتى بنا لهذه الساعة المقدسة وأنه يوجد فى كنيستنا هذا القديس العظيم ونطلب صلواته وشفاعته من أجلنا جميعًا، لكى ما يرافق طريقنا ويكمل مسيرة حياتنا ويعطينا أن نعيش ونتمتع بصداقة القديسين، لإلهنا كل مجد وكرامة من الآن وإلى الأبد آمين.

"Is the Bible truly God’s Word?"

Answer: Our answer to this question will not only determine how we view the Bible and its importance to our lives, but also it will ultimately have an eternal impact on us. If the Bible is truly God’s Word, then we should cherish it, study it, obey it, and fully trust it. If the Bible is the Word of God, then to dismiss it is to dismiss God Himself.

The fact that God gave us the Bible is an evidence and illustration of His love for us. The term “revelation” simply means that God communicated to mankind what He is like and how we can have a right relationship with Him. These are things that we could not have known had God not divinely revealed them to us in the Bible. Although God’s revelation of Himself in the Bible was given progressively over approximately 1500 years, it has always contained everything man needs to know about God in order to have a right relationship with Him. If the Bible is truly the Word of God, then it is the final authority for all matters of faith, religious practice, and morals.

The question we must ask ourselves is how can we know that the Bible is the Word of God and not just a good book? What is unique about the Bible that sets it apart from all other religious books ever written? Is there any evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word? These types of questions must be seriously examined if we are to determine the validity of the Bible’s claim to be the very Word of God, divinely inspired, and totally sufficient for all matters of faith and practice. There can be no doubt that the Bible does claim to be the very Word of God. This is clearly seen in Paul’s commendation to Timothy: “… from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

There are both internal and external evidences that the Bible is truly God’s Word. The internal evidences are those things within the Bible that testify of its divine origin. One of the first internal evidences that the Bible is truly God’s Word is seen in its unity. Even though it is really sixty-six individual books, written on three continents, in three different languages, over a period of approximately 1500 years, by more than 40 authors who came from many walks of life, the Bible remains one unified book from beginning to end without contradiction. This unity is unique from all other books and is evidence of the divine origin of the words which God moved men to record.

Another of the internal evidences that indicates the Bible is truly God’s Word is the prophecies contained within its pages. The Bible contains hundreds of detailed prophecies relating to the future of individual nations including Israel, certain cities, and mankind. Other prophecies concern the coming of One who would be the Messiah, the Savior of all who would believe in Him. Unlike the prophecies found in other religious books or those by men such as Nostradamus, biblical prophecies are extremely detailed. There are over three hundred prophecies concerning Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. Not only was it foretold where He would be born and His lineage, but also how He would die and that He would rise again. There simply is no logical way to explain the fulfilled prophecies in the Bible other than by divine origin. There is no other religious book with the extent or type of predictive prophecy that the Bible contains.

A third internal evidence of the divine origin of the Bible is its unique authority and power. While this evidence is more subjective than the first two, it is no less a powerful testimony of the divine origin of the Bible. The Bible’s authority is unlike any other book ever written. This authority and power are best seen in the way countless lives have been transformed by the supernatural power of God’s Word. Drug addicts have been cured by it, homosexuals set free by it, derelicts and deadbeats transformed by it, hardened criminals reformed by it, sinners rebuked by it, and hate turned to love by it. The Bible does possess a dynamic and transforming power that is only possible because it is truly God’s Word.

There are also external evidences that indicate the Bible is truly the Word of God. One is the historicity of the Bible. Because the Bible details historical events, its truthfulness and accuracy are subject to verification like any other historical document. Through both archaeological evidences and other writings, the historical accounts of the Bible have been proven time and time again to be accurate and true. In fact, all the archaeological and manuscript evidence supporting the Bible makes it the best-documented book from the ancient world. The fact that the Bible accurately and truthfully records historically verifiable events is a great indication of its truthfulness when dealing with religious subjects and doctrines and helps substantiate its claim to be the very Word of God.

Another external evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word is the integrity of its human authors. As mentioned earlier, God used men from many walks of life to record His words. In studying the lives of these men, we find them to be honest and sincere. The fact that they were willing to die often excruciating deaths for what they believed testifies that these ordinary yet honest men truly believed God had spoken to them. The men who wrote the New Testament and many hundreds of other believers (1 Corinthians 15:6) knew the truth of their message because they had seen and spent time with Jesus Christ after He had risen from the dead. Seeing the risen Christ had a tremendous impact on them. They went from hiding in fear to being willing to die for the message God had revealed to them. Their lives and deaths testify to the fact that the Bible truly is God’s Word.

A final external evidence that the Bible is truly God’s Word is the indestructibility of the Bible. Because of its importance and its claim to be the very Word of God, the Bible has suffered more vicious attacks and attempts to destroy it than any other book in history. From early Roman Emperors like Diocletian, through communist dictators and on to modern-day atheists and agnostics, the Bible has withstood and outlasted all of its attackers and is still today the most widely published book in the world.

Throughout time, skeptics have regarded the Bible as mythological, but archeology has confirmed it as historical. Opponents have attacked its teaching as primitive and outdated, but its moral and legal concepts and teachings have had a positive influence on societies and cultures throughout the world. It continues to be attacked by pseudo-science, psychology, and political movements, yet it remains just as true and relevant today as it was when it was first written. It is a book that has transformed countless lives and cultures throughout the last 2000 years. No matter how its opponents try to attack, destroy, or discredit it, the Bible remains; its veracity and impact on lives is unmistakable. The accuracy which has been preserved despite every attempt to corrupt, attack, or destroy it is clear testimony to the fact that the Bible is truly God’s Word and is supernaturally protected by Him. It should not surprise us that, no matter how the Bible is attacked, it always comes out unchanged and unscathed. After all, Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Mark 13:31). After looking at the evidence, one can say without a doubt that, yes, the Bible is truly God’s Word.

الحياة المجددة من خلال العلاقة مع الرب يسوع





كما هو مذكور سابقا أن المعنى الحقيقى لحياتنا الأرضية أوالأبديه يمكن تحقيقه من خلال أصلاح علاقه الانسان بالله، تلك العلاقه التى تم تدميرها عندما وقوع آدم وحواء فى الخطيئه. اليوم هذه العلاقه مع الله ممكنه من خلال قبول أبنه يسوع المسيح (أعمال الرسل 12:4 ، يوحنا 6:14 ، يوحنا 12:1). أن الحصول على الحياه الابديه يتم عندم يتوب الانسان (عندما لا يريد الانسان أن يستمر فى الخطأ ويطلب من الرب يسوع أن يغيره وأن يجعله أنسانا جديدا) ويبدأ فى الاتكال على الرب يسوع كمخلص (للمزيد من المعلومات، أقرأ السؤال ما هى خطه الله الخلاص.

أن المعنى الحقيقى للحياه ليس فقط فى قبول الرب يسوع كمخلص (على الرغم من روعه ذلك) أن المعنى الحقيقى للحياه هو عندما يبدأ الانسان فى أتباع الرب يسوع كواحد من تلاميذه يتعلم منه ومن كلمته وكتابه المقدس والشركه معه فى الصلاه والسير معه وأطاعه وصاياه. أذا كنت غير مؤمن ( أو حديث الايمان) أنت تقول لنفسك أنا لا أعتقد أن هذا سيحقق لى حياه هادفة. ولكننا نرجوك أن تستمر فى القراءه. لقد أعلن يسوع :

" تعالو الى يا جميع المتعبين والثقيلى الاحمال وأنا أريحكم. أحملوا نيرى عليكم وتعلموا منى لأنى وديع ومتواضع القلب فتجدوا راحه لنفوسكم. لأن نيرى هين وحملى خفيف" ( متى 28:11- 30).

" أما أنا فقد أتيت ليكون لهم حياه ويكون لهم أفضل" (يوحنا 10:10). " حينئذ قال يسوع لتلاميذه أن أراد أحد أن يأتى ورائى فلينكر نفسه ويحمل صليبه ويتبعنى. فأن من أراد أن يخلص نفسه يهلكها ومن يهلك نفسه يجدها" (متى 24:16-25). " تلذذ بالرب فيعطيك سؤل قلبك" ( مزامير 4:37).

أن ما تقوله جميع هذه الاصحاحات هو أنه لديك فرصه للأختيار. يمكننا أن نستمر فى محاوله أداره حياتنا بأنفسنا(ونتيجه لذلك ستكون حياتنا بدون هدف) أو يمكننا أن نتجه بكل قلوبنا فى سؤال الرب أن يتولي هو ادارة حياتنا (مما سيؤدى الى حياة هادفة وأستجابه سؤل قلبك والشعور بالرضا والاشباع) . أن هذا كله لأن خالقنا يحبنا ويريد الافضل لنا دائما (ليس بالضرورة الحياه السهله ولكن حياه هادفة وذات معني.

فى الختام أريد أن أشارك معك تحليلا أخذته عن قس صديق لى. أذا كنت تحب الرياضه وقررت أن تذهب الى أحدى المباريات المهمه، يمكنك توفير بضعه الدولارات والجلوس فى كرسى بالخلف أو يمكنك التضحيه ببضعه دولارات أكثر والجلوس فى المقدمه حيث تدور المباريات. هكذا هى الحياة المسيحية، يمكنك أن تجلس في الخلف وأن تذهب للكنيسة أيام الآحاد. ويمكنك أن تختار أن تضحي وأن تدفع الثمن من خلال تسليم حياتك كلية لله. أن تضع ارادة الله فوق رغباتك الشخصية وأن تجد هدف ومعني في تكريس حياتك لتمجيد الله. هل ترغب فى تلك الحياة؟ أذا كان الأمر كذلك، فأنك لن تحتاج أبدا أن تبحث عن هدف أو معنى فى حياتك .

"What is the meaning of life?"



Answer: What is the meaning of life? How can purpose, fulfillment, and satisfaction in life be found? How can something of lasting significance be achieved? Many people have never stopped to consider these important questions. They look back years later and wonder why their relationships have fallen apart and why they feel so empty, even though they may have achieved what they set out to accomplish. An athlete who had reached the pinnacle of his sport was once asked what he wished someone would have told him when he first started playing his sport. He replied, “I wish that someone would have told me that when you reach the top, there’s nothing there.” Many goals reveal their emptiness only after years have been wasted in their pursuit.

In our humanistic culture, people lose sight of the meaning of life. They pursue many things, thinking that in them they will find meaning and purpose. Some of these pursuits include business success, wealth, good relationships, sex, entertainment, and doing good to others. People have testified that, while they achieved their goals of wealth, relationships, and pleasure, there was still a deep void inside, a feeling of emptiness that nothing seemed to fill.

The author of the book of Ecclesiastes looked for the meaning of life in many vain pursuits. He describes the feeling of emptiness he felt: “Meaningless! Meaningless! . . . Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). King Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, had wealth beyond measure, wisdom beyond any man of his time or ours, hundreds of women, palaces and gardens that were the envy of kingdoms, the best food and wine, and every form of entertainment available. He said at one point that anything his heart wanted, he pursued (Ecclesiastes 2:10). And yet he summed up life “under the sun”—life lived as though all there is to life is what we can see with our eyes and experience with our senses—is meaningless. What explains this void? God created us for something beyond what we can experience in the here-and-now. Solomon said of God, “He has also set eternity in the hearts of men” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). In our hearts we are aware that the “here-and-now” is not all that there is.

In the book of Genesis, we find a clue to the meaning of life in the fact that God created mankind in His image (Genesis 1:26). This means that we are more like God than we are like anything else. We also find that, before mankind fell and the curse of sin came upon the earth, the following things were true: 1) God made man a social creature (Genesis 2:18–25); 2) God gave man work (Genesis 2:15); 3) God had fellowship with man (Genesis 3:8); and 4) God gave man dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:26). These facts have significance related to the meaning of life. God intended mankind to have fulfillment in life, but our condition (especially touching our fellowship with God) was adversely affected by the fall into sin and the resulting curse upon the earth (Genesis 3).

The book of Revelation shows that God is concerned with restoring the meaning of life to us. God reveals that He will destroy this present creation and create a new heaven and a new earth. At that time, He will restore full fellowship with redeemed mankind, while the unredeemed will have been judged unworthy and cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11–15). The curse of sin will be done away with; there will be no more sin, sorrow, sickness, death, or pain (Revelation 21:4). God will dwell with mankind, and they shall be His children (Revelation 21:7). Thus, we come full circle: God created us to have fellowship with Him; man sinned, breaking that fellowship; God restores that fellowship fully in the eternal state. To go through life achieving everything we set out to achieve only to die separated from God for eternity would be worse than futile! But God has made a way to not only make eternal bliss possible (Luke 23:43) but also life on earth satisfying and meaningful. How is this eternal bliss and “heaven on earth” obtained?

The meaning of life restored through Jesus Christ

The real meaning of life, both now and in eternity, is found in the restoration of our relationship with God. This restoration is only possible through God’s Son, Jesus Christ, who reconciles us to God (Romans 5:10; Acts 4:12; John 1:12; 14:6). Salvation and eternal life are gained when we trust in Jesus Christ as Savior. Once that salvation is received by grace through faith, Christ makes us new creations, and we begin the progressive journey of growing closer to Him and learning to rely on Him.

God wants us to know the meaning of life. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). A “full” life is logically one that is meaningful and devoid of aimless wandering.

The meaning of life is wrapped up in the glory of God. In calling His elect, God says, “Bring all who claim me as their God, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them” (Isaiah 43:7, NLT). The reason we were made is for God’s glory. Any time we substitute our own glory for God’s, we miss the meaning of life. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:24–25). “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

"Do Christians have to obey the Old Testament law?"

Answer: The key to understanding the relationship between the Christian and the Law is knowing that the Old Testament law was given to the nation of Israel, not to Christians. Some of the laws were to reveal to the Israelites how to obey and please God (the Ten Commandments, for example). Some of the laws were to show the Israelites how to worship God and atone for sin (the sacrificial system). Some of the laws were intended to make the Israelites distinct from other nations (the food and clothing rules). None of the Old Testament law is binding on Christians today. When Jesus died on the cross, He put an end to the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23–25; Ephesians 2:15).

In place of the Old Testament law, Christians are under the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2), which is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…and to love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). If we obey those two commands, we will be fulfilling all that Christ requires of us: “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:40). Now, this does not mean the Old Testament law is irrelevant today. Many of the commands in the Old Testament law fall into the categories of “loving God” and “loving your neighbor.” The Old Testament law can be a good guidepost for knowing how to love God and knowing what goes into loving your neighbor. At the same time, to say that the Old Testament law applies to Christians today is incorrect. The Old Testament law is a unit (James 2:10). Either all of it applies, or none of it applies. If Christ fulfilled some of it, such as the sacrificial system, He fulfilled all of it.

“This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3). The Ten Commandments were essentially a summary of the entire Old Testament law. Nine of the Ten Commandments are clearly repeated in the New Testament (all except the command to observe the Sabbath day). Obviously, if we are loving God, we will not be worshiping false gods or bowing down before idols. If we are loving our neighbors, we will not be murdering them, lying to them, committing adultery against them, or coveting what belongs to them. The purpose of the Old Testament law is to convict people of our inability to keep the law and point us to our need for Jesus Christ as Savior (Romans 7:7-9; Galatians 3:24). The Old Testament law was never intended by God to be the universal law for all people for all of time. We are to love God and love our neighbors. If we obey those two commands faithfully, we will be upholding all that God requires of us.
