20 أغسطس: عيد إعادة الحصول على الاستقلال في إستونيا
1882 - الإنجليز يحتلون بورسعيد والإسماعيلية وذلك في بداية الاحتلال الإنجليزي لمصر.
1956 - قادة الثورة الجزائرية يعقدون مؤتمر الصومام في منطقة القبائل، وفيه اتخذ قرارًا بإقامة المجلس الوطني للثورة الجزائرية.
1976 - الزعيم الدرزي كمال جنبلاط (في الصورة) يحذر من قيام وطن قومي ماروني في لبنان يكون أخطر من إسرائيل.
1986 - الاتحاد السوفيتي يعترف رسميًا بكارثة مفاعل تشيرنوبل النووي.
2011 - بدء معركة طرابلس ضمن معارك ثورة 17 فبراير وذلك لتحرير العاصمة الليبية من قوات العقيد معمر القذافي.

- 1909 – Pluto was photographed for the first time at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, U.S., 15 years before it was officially discovered by Clyde Tombaugh.
- 1944 – World War II: The Gestapo transported 168 Allied airmen, who had been classified as spies and criminals so as not to warrant prisoner of war treatment, to Buchenwald concentration camp.
- 1988 – Fires (pictured) in the United States' Yellowstone National Park destroyed more than 150,000 acres (610 km2), the single-worst day of the conflagration.
