Cyprus hijacker expected to be extradited and face trial back in Egypt
Cyprus hijacker expected to be extradited and face trial back in Egypt

The Egyptian man who hijacked an airliner and forced it to land in Cyprus is expected to be extradited and face trial back in Egypt. Cyprus's justice ministry has agreed to send Seif al-Din Mustafa, 59, home to Egypt where he is likely to face charges of hijacking and potentially terrorism. The decision is awaiting final approval by Cyprus's attorney general.

Mustafa, who said he hijacked the plane in a bid to see his Cypriot ex-wife and children, could try to appeal the decision on human rights grounds. Cyprus is a party to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which forbids the extradition of suspects back to countries where they could face torture or degrading treatment.
